Instructional Coach, Turner School District

Laura Gilchrist is a Champion of Collaborative School Leadership & Connected Ed/City Ecosystems to elevate youth. Laura is the Instructional Coach at Turner High School in Kansas City. She spent 20 beautiful years as a middle school science & social studies teacher doing PBL, multi-media storytelling, and #STEM with her kids. She was a Missouri Teacher of the Year (TOY) finalist, Christa McAuliffe Pioneer in Education Award winner, and Bammy finalist.

Laura served on the Kansas State Education Redesign Team and on the Kansas Teacher Leadership Team. To support growth of connected ecosystems, Laura moderates multiple edchats (#MOedchat, #KSedchat, #NTchat and #LeadUpTeach) and organizes Edcamps (#EdcampKC, #EdcampLeadership, School-based Edcamps, #Parentcamp). She is on a mission to grow connected and empowered educational ecosystems to elevate youth (and educators) as self-identified learners and leaders. Laura served on KCMO Mayor Sly James’ Challenge Cabinet and has hosted KC educator meetups, KCedu, for over 2 years, now averaging 50+ people per meetup. Laura is passionate about teacher leadership, teacher-led professional learning, parent-school partnerships including parentcamps, and she believes in the need for intentionality around collaborative school vision and leadership.

Laura believes there's nothing stopping us from collaborating and innovating in schools, except ourselves. Leadership driving communities enthusiastically toward a shared vision is what is needed to redesign our school system so it's shining from the inside out!
