Joe Whalen

Joe Whalen has been with the Blue Valley Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) since the facility opened 2010. As a founding member of the Bioscience department, Joe has found great satisfaction in supporting students as they design and execute their independent research projects. His approach to teaching is to help students determine what gets them excited and then assist them in crafting their educational experience around this topic. In addition to working with the CAPS Bioscience students, Joe also teaches a class called Future of Food. Here, students learn about the scientific, business, and societal aspects of food and the food industry. Student experiences range from examining the chemistry of food and nutrition to writing a business plan for marketing a food product of their own invention. Joe holds master’s degrees in Molecular & Cellular Biology from Oregon State University and Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Kansas. He enjoys all forms of outdoor recreation and hitting the open road with his lovely wife Heather.
